So, I like knitting socks - there are some gorgeous (and addictive) sock yarns about, they're easy to make once you get the hang of a couple of basic things, it's something that you always need lots of, and they're small to carry around.  I like having a sock on the needles so that I've always got a small enough project to carry around on the bus or wherever.  However, the last few socks I've made have just been plain pattern-wise, since I've been using self-patterning yarn, and I'm a bit bored of that.  I fancy making something more... fancy.  However however, I'm dead flat broke and can't afford to go buying any new yarn.  Which means that I'll be using what I already have: Opal Rodeo #1170 (which is rather like #1152 in that pic, only with a muted pink instead of purple).

Question is, then, would that yarn look awful if I knitted it up using a textured pattern?  I spose could make knitting it up a bit more interesting by using a different 'plain' pattern - a toe-up one, or short row heels, or whatever.  But I do want to do some that aren't just stocking stitch at some point!  And actually, I do have some plain sock yarn somewhere or other (with most of my yarn stash, currently in Mum's loft, but I should be getting it back soon), but it's dark grey because I was planning on making some HP house socks.  Because I am a dork.  So I don't really want to use that yarn for anything else.  I don't think I have any other appropriate 4-ply, and I didn't want to use anything thicker because then I won't be able to wear them til winter.  Although I'm always happy to take suggestions!  I throw it open to you, flist.
