Um... put a little water on the onions. That helps.

Ooh, thank you darling - I'll give that a try next time. I hate chopping them, but I use them in almost all my cooking! Gah!

put a teaspoon in your mouth, upside down, so the 'bowl' presses against your soft palate

if nothing else it will be so irritating that you'll be distracted ...

ROFL!

I tried that once, but I didn't know about the upside down bit. That may be why it didn't work.

Holding a bit of bread in my mouth (poking out, so it absorbs the vapours) did work, but made me feel very silly so I stopped.

LMAO! That must have been really uncomfortable!

I might try the bread thing, too. Nobody can see me but the cat, so I dare say I can cope with feeling like a wally. (How strange - I don't think I've used the word wally since I was 10 years old... I wonder where that suddenly came from?)

Huh. I'll try anything! I wonder if the same thing would work with the horrible hayfever soft-palate itching?

If you have a fan over your hob, move your chopping on to your hob and turn it on. It instantly sucks away the fumes.

OMG, so simple but so obvious. I was right by the hob, too. In my defense, I've only had a hob fan for a couple of months and I never remember it's there!

I heard once that biting down on a wooden pencil is supposed to help, though it never has for me. My mom says she has less difficulty when she's wearing her contact lenses. ...which also doesn't work for me. :-D Basically I'm left not using onions or chopping as quick as I can and praying I don't accidentally cut my finger in the process.

Also I realize that you're probably done cutting the onions by now, so this is all moot anyhoo. Heh.

Huh... I guess I'll give the pencil a try if I can find one - I mainly have those disposable plastic propelling ones! Don't have contacts, so I can't test that theory. I tend to do the fast chopping thing too, with frequent breaks to rinse my hands and flee my kitchen for a break to wipe my eyes.

And I was indeed done with cutting that onion, but I use the damn things in almost everything I cook, it seems, so I've got to get some sort of solution worked out! Hee :-)

I keep my onions in the fridge and then I stick them in the freezer for 10 - 15 minutes before I get to cutting them. It cuts down on the fumes quite a bit.

Hmm! That onion was pretty well straight out of the fridge, but I shall definitely try the freezer trick next time. Taaaaaaaaaa :-)

I read an article that says chewing gum while you chop helps your eyes, though I forget the hows/whys of the thing.

What're you making?

Huh, I shall give that one a go. Not sure if I even have any gum, but it's probably the same for chewing any old thing, right?

I was making cream of mushroom soup. It was gooooooooooooooooood :-)
